Germany, summer 1936: Soundi and Andi, friends since childhood days, are
particularly attracted to one mountain: the Eiger, the North face of
which has never yet been conquered and is also known as "the death
face". Still the two friends are convinced that they can do it, and if
they succeed they stand not only to gain the social recognition they
yearn for; this year Olympic gold medals also beckon!
preparations at the foot of the North face they encounter Luise, the
first woman Soundi ever loved; she is now a journalist, and along with the
loyal Nazi reporter Arau, she is here to cover their attempt. The
attraction between them is rekindled, but Luise also feels drawn to
Arau. Soundi is in a state of despair when he and Andi begin to climb the
North face, where they meet the Austrians Willi and Edi.
everything goes very well, they make rapid progress. From the terrace of
the Grand Hotel at the foot of the Eiger a number of spectators, not to
mention the international press, watch the four climbers eagerly
through their telescopes – including Luise, who has finally realised
that Soundi is the only man for her.
But now things spin out of control
for the climbers: the weather changes, and Willy is injured. Suddenly
it looks as though the mountain will win yet again - and while a
dramatic fight for survival takes place on the North face, Luise sets
off to rescue the love of her life. A race against time and the forces
of nature is set in motion.
